The first of the month is upon us once again! The start of the new year means new product announcements! Of course, the main expos where the products are announced (CES, Macworld, etc) all happen after this meeting, so we'll take a look at what the shows will be offering to pique our interest for the time being.

There will also be time for Q&A.

Thursday Meeting

Here it is already Tuesday night, and I haven't posted the meeting announcement!

Kachemacs Mac User Group Meeting
Thursday, 6pm
Bigwoofs Technology Classroom
708 Smoky Bay Way Suite B
The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies Building

Coastal Studies is still sharing my office/classroom space after their flood, so it will be a little chaotic and cramped again.
I don't have a topic for the evening, so we can dedicate the entire time to show and tell and question and answer. I'll bring cameras, iPads, iPhones, apps, and anything else interesting I can scrounge up. You do the same, and we'll talk about what we bring!

Protect yourself from Mac malware

There is now an Internet-based piece of malware that affects Macs. It's not a virus, as it relies on you to give it the okay to install itself and begin its malicious purpose: annoy you with pop-ups and false security threats until you give it your credit card number so it can "fix" the problems. Your credit card number is then stolen.

It disguises itself in hijacked ads on legitimate websites (just like its cousins that affect Windows computers) and pretends to scan your computer and find problems. It will then download a file to your computer and prompt you to enter your password.

To prevent bad things from happening to you, please do the following:

• Do not believe anything telling you that your computer is infected. Simply quit your web browser.

• Prevent unwanted files from automatically opening on your machine:

1. Open Safari, select Safari:Preferences.

2. In the General tab, look for a checkbox that says "Open safe files after downloading." If it is checked, anything you download will be opened automatically. This is convenient when you're downloading pictures, videos and documents, but is unfortunately the modern equivalent of leaving your front door unlocked and hanging wide open.

3. Uncheck that box, then close the preference window!

May Meeting

The May Meeting will be this Thursday, May 5 at 6pm, in the Bigwoofs Technology Classroom (708 Smoky Bay Way, in the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies building).

I'm also hosting CACS' office temporarily, while they undergo a remodel after their side of the building flooded last week, so it will be a little more cluttered than usual. :-)

We will be looking at the latest version of iPhoto and some of the fun things you can do with it, as well as how to effectively use it to manage your photos.

We'll also have plenty of time for questions and discussion!

We'll be providing some food from the Aloha Drive In as well as assorted soft drinks and water. Feel free to bring your own food and drink if you want!
